Hi Atton,

Nice to see you around :)
I hope you will bring back your hat too. No matter how much fun a 2-weeks event hat may be, the freedom of choice to enter whenever possible can only be provide by a permanent hat. So don't care about 'enter-hits'. 50 visitors a year on a permanent hat is still better than 20 on a 2 weeks hat!

I hate to burst your bubble Lord Atton (that's a lie of course....I LOVE doing it) but times they have changed since the early days of the Lith HAT.

I agree Monolith had an excellent and well-balanced map set given the era when the official Monolith HAT ran, but players evolved and got better (in some cases rapidly). Before lith ever even closed the official HAT, the skill set of many players had long since outpaced the assumptions inherent in the official maps. And that was over 7 years ago. Imagine how evolved the players' skills are NOW??!! Any half-way skilled player can start from scratch and have full maximum gear on a lith-style HAT in a manner of several hours (roughly 6 as a rule). And no, I'm not talking about using cheats, hacks, or anything of the kind. Using those things lowers the time to more like 2 hours. Ask a few veteran players if you don't believe me. Striking some balance between making it easy enough for new players so they don't quit in frustration yet challenging for veterans so they don't quit from boredom is no simple task, I will admit, but it must be done.

As to hacked gear....arguably the advent of "quest" gear (available the moment the official rom2 multiplayer pack was released) qualifies as hacked gear by any standard definition since it's not "shop legal". And that gear was all over the "official" lith maps.

And eliminating level 5 spiders? Give me a break. The monster itself is not the problem, it's the context in which the monster is placed and the skill of the player which matter here. Even an army of auto-blessed level 5 spiders is no real challenge for a skilled player provided he/she has room to maneuver. The real question is: does the reward offered by defeating a map or monster group fit the challenge/task involved to do so. Killing six level-3 orcs on a medium map and getting body +3 gear is a classic example of the reward outpacing the challenge. But the reverse is true as well. Fighting long and hard against a top-level horror quest map using strategy and tactics which border on sheer wizardry hardly seems worth it if the reward is simply shop-legal gear but done in a different color (meteoric gear instead of crystal for instance).

Bottom line, I hope you do put your HAT up. And if you do, please please please structure it so as to challenge those of us who still play the game. We need to see something we've never seen before. We need to be challenged to think outside-the-box and to learn new things which will make us better players than we already are.

Thanks Nova, I found the auto sign up and got my chrs started. I may start up my old hat again also. I think too much hacked gear spoiles the game. I think Nival got it right in the original also game. So if I do run a hat it will be with classic maps and no hacked gear. No level 5 spiders either.

Looks like I spoke a bit too soon.....I am now only one quest item short of the max fighter gear. Only took me 6 days since the HAT went online.

1. I will keep my HAT up for far longer than a week, I promise. So it's safe to start an account there. Heck, it's going to take me at least 2 weeks to get the top gear (probably longer now considering I'm traveling out of town on business plus I now have a funeral to attend later this week).

2. If/when you decide to run your HAT, let me know. First, I want an account on there (maybe even more than one). Second, I have some suggestions for how you can keep some of the more mundane game cheaters out of your servers which you might want to incorporate.

3. You can read up on the details of my HAT at the Chaos9 website using:
Tour the HAT

You can also check the status of the HAT at any time via the internet using the following link:

Chaos9 HAT status page

You can see the map rotations list, how long before the maps will change, if any of the servers have crashed (or if someone is holding the map), and what players are currently playing on each map (if any).

You can also make your own account(s) or change your account password using the:

Hope to see you there.

I don't have a chr on your server Nova. I do have three chr on Austin's. But to keep it up for a week won't help me much. No I don't have max gear and so far I am not bored, but not too exciting either. Then I only recently came back to Rom2. I might start up a Hat server IF it does not load down my other computer. I have a router that splits the IP. I do have one computer that used to run Rom2 and it is still on there. It need a few things to make it work right. I will consider it. Austin some of those maps you have are pretty good. Too bad there is no Rage of Mages 3. I would play it if it were available.

Pretty good run though. Most HATs don't last much more than 3-4 weeks anymore. If history repeats, I expect everyone will have max gear and be bored out of their minds on Chaos9 about a month from now. When that happens, I'll take it down again and the next person can put up a HAT (and the cycle will continue ad nauseum).

Well, in that case I might be taking my hat down, due to the fact that its bogging my computer down and not many people are playing, because everyones already got the best gear...I will probably take the hat down in about a week unless someone REALLY wants me to keep it up. I will keep all the character files so if I decide to put it back up sometime you will still have your old character
