Hi everybody, I finally got RoM2 to work under my Windows 7. Basically, I followed this guide

http://www.duxburysystems.com/documentation/megadots/vmware.htm

and created a virtual PC with Windows XP, on which RoM runs with no problem. Here are some direct links to download XP Mode which you can use:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-virtual-pc-and-windows-xp-mode-official-direct-download-links/

Don't use it with Windows 7 Virtual PC though, because it won't run RoM because of the graphic device it is emulating. VMware works fine with XP Mode downloaded from Microsoft sites, as the guide says.

Hope it works for you and enjoy the game again :)

I have the same problem as the OP.
I can do everything in game, click on the icons, start a new game and the sound works like it should. Visually though, nothing happens and the screen is just frozen. It is like everything is happening as it should "behind" the frozen screen, but I am just not seeing it. There is a small horizontal bar where I can see the mouse cursor move, and can see everything else..

alt+tabbing out and going back into the game will refresh the screen to the appropriate stage, like with character creation, where you choose your character, and apoint the skills etc. but once you get there, the screen freezes again and you can kinda guess with the sounds and clicking in the hope you hit the right buttons..

I have tried various compatibility options but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

*** Errata corrige: ***

I realize I have said contradictory things in my previous posts. More precisely...

... two posts ago I said:

But rom2 has no real use for accelerated graphics. You could even install a Win98 in VMware and then install rom2 in the virtualized Win98 -- so playing worry free.

Although a Win98 guest system would be ideal for the rom2 game, it will have no access to the _real_ functionalities of your graphics card -- because the card is virtualized and abstracted by VMware.

Sorry for that -- let me clarify.

While rom2 is happy with _any_ graphics card (even a fake one virtualized for Win98 by VMware), it still makes use of DirectDraw to communitcate with such card.

That is the catch.

Since the guest system (your Win98) can not recognize the card for what it truly is, so DirectDraw can not make the proper calls to your hardware in order to make rom2 work properly.

VMware began supporting 3D hardware acceleration only for WinXP (and newer) guest systems.

Although a Win98 guest system would be ideal for the rom2 game, it will have no access to the _real_ functionalities of your graphics card -- because the card is virtualized and abstracted by VMware.
Not only DirectX (and its DirectDraw subcomponent) will be unable to recognize the true graphics card powering the computer, but they will be incapable of any low level communication with it -- And games will not run properly, if at all.

But with WinXP (and newer) VMware allows DirectX to talk directly with the true graphics card -- de facto piercing through the whole abstraction layer provided by the virtualization of VMware.
Not unlike a bridge connecting the virtual (guest system) with the physical (graphcis card known by the host system).

I hear that the most recent VMware versions have done wonders to support 3D hardware acceleration. If I were you, I would google for proper up-to-date info before doing anything.

Hi greyfox. I already tried a VM with win98 and still had freezing problem on the menu screen.(Host system win 7, 64 bit). You think only solution is to play on winxp?

Maybe a bit of extreme -- but If you can run Win7, you can run rom2 in a WinXP in a VM without problem.

Get yourself VMware or equivalent software with which you can create virtual machines and install an operating system into them.
VMware supports 3D graphics hardware acceleration when the guest system is WinXP.
But rom2 has no real use for accelerated graphics. You could even install a Win98 in VMware and then install rom2 in the virtualized Win98 -- so playing worry free.

Consider this a time-machine, by which you can keep very old software alive and running on very modern hardware.

Hello, same problem with xenn. On windows 7 rom2.exe just freezes in a dark screen where the main menu should be.Compatibility mode has no effect!. i tried it on virtual pc 2007 -win 98 but while the game starts normally, dialogue boxes do not appear, only sound, and the game freezes when you press esc and the menu comes up. Do you know of any solution? i also tried various fixes like nocd but again without results...

it does that every time?
I have not installed it on my win7 machine, but you can try running it in compatibility mode for XP. (everything works in XP its epic like that)

hi all rom lovers. i played this game for when i was a young lad. it was always fun. now i want that fun back but there is a problem. i cant make demo or the original game work properly. problems start from the beginning. mouse freezes in main menu visually (it still clicks if you manage to select one of the menu icons by guess). but to see next menu i have to return to windows and return. and then again mouse freezes visually. that problem happens in demo too. so, is it w7, quad processor cores, graphics card?

what might be my problem? i really miss rom2.
