I do not know this for certain, but rumor has it that either Simon Dekker (albadaran) or BBKing will be hosting a Thanksgiving or a Christmas ROM2 HAT.

You can either keep your fingers crossed (and hope they do), or you can gather all your ROM2 playing friends together and either email BBKing and Albadaran OR post your desire to play here on this forum. A list of confirmed players for a HAT might just might be inducement enough to persuade them to host a HAT.

Oh, I almost forgot, HAMACHI also works as a nice chat program between players (sorta like MSN Messenger) and it also works as an encrypted file sharing network through which you can host and share files with one another. Everyone in the network can browse your SHARED FOLDER and see (and download) the files you have there. The actual transfers are encrypted by HAMACHI.

Not bad for something that's FREE.

Are you talking about hosting/playing ROM2 in MULTIPLAYER or DEDICATED SERVER games? It makes a huge difference. With mulitplayer, you can only host one map at a time, and that map shuts down as soon as the "host" player exits. On the other hand, the dedicated server hosting allows you to run multiple maps all at the same time and the maps continue 24/7 with or without the "host" player being present. Hosting the dedicated server requires patching the original ROM2 game files and also requires the dedicated server software in order to host. This was released to public domain back when Monolith shut down the official ROM2 server site back in 2001 (I think). More recently, Exlend has written his own dedicated server program for the game which contains some considerable improvements over the official original. You can find Exlend's posts (and links to his web site which hosts his programs for FREE download) elsewhere in this forum.

No matter how you're hosting, there is a way around the router problem. Essentially, you set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) which tunnels all clients past your router and they can then connect to your hosted game. If you're savvy at computer networking, you can set one up yourself. If you're not all that savvy, there are many "commercial" programs that automate the process of setting up a VPN. One such program (though it's really shareware), is called HAMACHI. It's FREE to use and limits the non-paying license users to no more than 16 people per private network. Everyone (players and host) all connect to the same private network which anyone can create and then you can connect right through the router by using the virtual IP address assigned to each network member by hamachi.

Google it and check it out. That may solve your hosting limitation problems.

Good luck to you all.
