multiclass character
rogue 5
cleric 5
sorcerer 5
total level 15

base hp should be less than 130 -- it has over 560 hp instead
how can you build that in just 15 levels is beyond my brain

max constitution bonus you get is 12 -- more than that is capped
con 12 yield a bonus of 6 additional hp per level
you do the math -- how much base constitution do you need to reach hp 565 in 15 levels?

a spell capacity that greatly surpass that of a level 40 sorcerer

only 3 items worn
with the number of immunities they grant i suppose each of those items is worth a little island in gold

capacity of casting heal up to 5 times -- if i count well
both on them selves or on others

armor class of 31 without spell boosting

saving throws that i will not list for sake of decency

but it get better
there are 4 of them together
and they are accompanied by 1 more -- with even more tremendous properties i refuse to list

these are the drow priestesses

someone explain me how is a wizard supposed to win against such group

being powerful does not count
their challenge is beyond power

they are built using untold rules
they are meant to outlive your spells and breathe them like breeze and use your same weapons against you

the problem is that you do not have infinite spells
a spell is not a sword
eventually you run out of bullets -- if your opponent is still alive you are doomed

that is why monsters should never be made too powerful
you must account for spellcasters
you must consider that they can not cast forever

but rhun is not for spellcasters

how can those drow mages have elephant hp and the saving throws of a fighter and a spell load capacity that is immensely beyond epic?

some thing is utterly wrong
why do not they go out and conquer the world?
a band of them together could outpower any thing

what irritate me most is that they cast dispeller after dispeller -- eventually they strip you naked
try and try you must succeed -- it is inevitable

but then they can still cast other spells to buff them selves up again?
and then they still have offensive spells to damage you???

how many spells can they load?

there are iron rules governing spells -- you can not bend them

you do not load what you want where you want how many times you want
instead you fight with your own spell book to find every time the best configuration for the task at hand

seem to me those priestesses can load like 70 level 9 spells
instead i can load 69 spells at best and only 6 of them are level 9
that should give you the measure of what i am talking about

the more i analyze the drow the more i see the stupidity of this module

the spells they use are beyond their caster level too
a sorcerer 5 can not go past 3rd level spells
how can they cast 9th level spells instead?
9th level requires caster level 17
9th level require an intelligence of 19
and you must pump your intelligence further if you want your spells to be of any efficiency

not only they have a stellar intelligence but they have a constitution that give them 565 hp
how many ability points can they spend in just 15 levels?
they should be 3 -- it is like they have spent 50 instead

those drow are completely impossible -- they can not exist
their whole being is out of reason

and i am tired to be joked around by a module designed by incompetents

rhun is not worth my time

nova,
you wanted to know how i would fare against specific foes you named

i have handled dragcous -- he died in 9 attacks

that would be 3 rounds for a hasted wizard -- but i took 4 rounds
dragcous managed to knock me down once -- that is how i lost time
in return i knocked him down as well -- we are even

he did not last 60 seconds
he could not damage me at all -- but he tried

he dropped dragon blood and a shadow dragon heart and one of his eyes
the eye is a nice gift
but what good is the heart? -- i will find out

next are the drows -- the shard lady told me to return to elidor

the exit from mountain orc village to mountain orc pass is very tricky

do this -- go to mountain orc village
inside village go straight north -- like you want to go to giacial castle

but do not descend to the bottom level
the exit to mountain orc pass is in the middle levels -- on the right

so search along the east edge of the map
look close at the cliff -- you find small foot prints in a corner
you can not click or inspect them

but hover the mouse around the prints and you see a tiny blue highlight to mark a exit
you can not reach the exit -- could be a path find problem maybe
instead use the keyboard to walk forward -- that works :-)

if you explore the mountain pass you do find a tower
its metal door want a specific key to open

i thought the mage or the pit fiend in the orc village would carry it
i was wrong -- could it be the key is inside the giacial castle?
i could never get it alone :-(

judging from tricky exit to reach the pass and the toughness of the mountain orcs i believe that some secret is linked to the tower
maybe it lead to under ground passage with treasure? :-)

thanks for your tips :-)

1. The Caves of Despair (aka beholders' cave)...Yes the beholder mages are nasty. The fact that there are 3 of them and the constant Time Stop they cast is quite deadly. Fortunately, I don't recall an;ything very important being down there. And it is possible to do solo, but your character must be VERY powerful indeed.

2. The glacial castle past the mountain orcs...I only vaguely remember this. I don't remember anything very important being there.

3. The locked tower....This one I totally do not remember. I must have slacked off, because my handwritten map quits at the mountain orc camp, so I don't have anything past that on my map. I'm going to assume if it was important, I would have put it on my map.

4. Getting to the Island of Taer....There are several ways to do this. The dragon Amnatkyl will take you there if you are high enough level. This dragon is located just north of the East Saral Shore (which you can get to if you go south out of Etum until you reach the shore and then head east). A second way is via magical transportals inside the mage towers (the tower in the Hagar Swamp is one such tower). This is a spoiler answer, but if you have your character speak the mage's name who built the tower, the door will open. The mage is named Hjalmar. Be careful on the island of Taer. The monsters are MUCH tougher than most of the rest of the World of Rhun. A third way to get to Taer is by using the Taer Obelisk rune (but you have to get to Taer another way your first time in order to take the rune from the obelisk).

Several things I would suggest you do before you try tackling the island of Taer:

A. Fully explore the Underdark (especially the Drow city -- which is HUGE)

B. Work on completing as many of the quests as you can. There are about 40 regular quests for NPCs in Etum plus there are a couple of mega-quests. One of the mega-quests you can get by talking to Lord Vaude in the Etum Castle. This quest will take a LONG time but it's really fun.

C. Try to collect all 9 Obelisk runes. Once you have all 9, you can exchange them for a special teleporting device by talking to Quin Peiwallow (who is standing right outside the mages' guild). Not only does this give you reason to travel to much of the world, the teleporting devices you get will ultimately make long distance traveling MUCH easier.

D. Try to reach and defeat the Flayer king who resides in a forgotten temple at the end of the Dark Woods. It's a LOOONG journey to get there by walking and the Flayers are really annoying, but the Flayer king has a nice helmet as a reward.

E. Try to visit and find all the other towns/cities: Desert Springs (on island of Taer), Glacial Hills (atop the Wyvern Spine), Drow city (in the Underdark), Fantasia (the Illithid city also in the Underdark), the Ancient city of Taer (requires you to complete a mega-quest so you can travel back in time to this city).

That ought to keep you busy for a while. And your rewards once you have completed all these things will be fantastic.

nova you are right

rhun treasure classes work different
challenge rating dictate the quality of loot
chase impossible monsters to get best stuff

i have questions for you

------------------------------
i have explored more -- in wyvern spine i find caves of despair
life is easy at beginning -- then i stop
down below in caverns i find 3 beholder mages
combined they make quick work of my hp -- they have elephant hp each instead
alone i can not win -- i imagine it is an area for a party
is there some thing important to do there any way?

------------------------------
i have returned to mountain orc village
now i scrape them off with out risking my neck
so i explore every inch of the place and find two exits

one lead to glacial castle
monsters inside there take long to kill
they can not win -- but they respawn too quick
eventually they gather and i am out powered
i must escape or run out of spells and die
another place for a party?
is it an important location for the module any way?

the second exit lead to mountain orc pass
there is a locked tower there -- the door want a key
who has it?

------------------------------
i also want to go to island of taer
i am told to seek a wizard in hagar swamp
but the gargoyle statue -dead rat?- ask me for a name
where do i learn this name?

damn -- you already replied

a question came to mind after my post yesterday

the cep pack is not required to play rhun
but in modder pub there is head less person telling that you need cep if you want to see his head

so rhun will use cep if it is present

owidd mountain too is full of head less people
i open the 3 barrels in the owidd tavern -- they are empty

often i find containers with 2 pages of items
but when i scroll to second page it is empty
or the first page has empty spots too in which could fit items

the baalors in abyss all die with out giving xp or loot

i wonder if with the cep i would see and pick up more items

before i download hundred of megabytes -cep- i would like to know if it would make a difference

please?

You'll have to look inside the Rhun module to confirm this, but I believe the selection of treasure "bucket" is determined by the monster challenge rating (which is supposed to be calculated by comparing your party's effective total character rating versus that of the monster group). Since many of the encounters in Rhun have forced encounter ratings (unfortunately) instead of being calculated, the reported difficulty is often NOT what the real difficulty is. Check the module scripts to see if this is really true.

Assuming it is, then the best treasure will be rewarded (statistically speaking) when you kill monsters with an IMPOSSIBLE challenge rating. So kill Dragcous the undead shadow dragon while you are level 1 and your likely to get rewarded with an EPIC level treasure item.

i see

my headband of intellect is +4
i would be happy with a +6 -- but i have never found other headband of the like
max +x you can amass from items is +12 any way -- above that is capped
if i could find ring of clear thought +6 and headband +6 i would not ask more
unless there is a single item with +12 intelligence ;-)

i know how treasure classes work
break points are level 2 and 4 and 7 and 11 and 14 and 17 -- then is top quality forever
these are the buckets you say

you can bet i returned to the places that spawned the items i use
strange is that i increase in level and the treasure classes decrease in quality

all my gear was found when i was below level 10 -- with exception of the 2 rings
then rate of junk increased to max and rate of useful stuff dropped to zero
i am used to hard play -- but this is beyond hard

mages are less item dependant -- normally
in rhun they need items -- because rhun have overpowered monsters
to pass a dmg reduction of 50/+20 is a monstrosity -- no deny that

only a dwarven defender may live happy with that
he can get titanic reduction of 30/- out of feats -- more if he give up other feats
if he use right belt for the job the belt stack with feats and goes to 50/-
pierce that! -- but i am no dwarven defender
and i have maybe one fourth the hp he could

some monsters squish me with 35 dmg per hit on their worst day
my wards are no thing to them -- i need belts
with out belts i only have my few hp to separate me from death
it is unfair
add that i am subject to spell interruption because i get so much harm
it is unfair on unfair

i imagine you have good constitution on your fighter
how would you fare with one third your hp and naked and all alone?
take in account half my spells are interrupted -- mages have 2 spells per round
mean while i keep take damage -- that is how i play
so excuse me if i whine too much for your liking :-)

robe of the archmagi? you found only 4? -- heh you say only

finding them is only first problem -- they have varying alignment restriction too
other than being mage you need right alignment to use the robe you find

a shame that i reach level 32 and my best gear has requirement of level 14
only once i got good luck -- or very bad luck
at level 7 i kill hill giant king in south etum and find epic gloves of animal handling
ranger and druid stuff -- cruel joke

who designed rhun?
may his dick fall off and bounce back to stick into his own anus

i would play on line with you if i was not with dial up

To be fair, the Druergar Dwarf region is intended to be impossibly difficult. It was added onto the Rhun module so that Epic level characters who had completed everything else had some place to go and still be challenged. It is also intended to be tackled by an entire party of Epic level characters (not solo). My solo level 40 fighter with a full set of Epic gear (armor, rings, belt, cloak, etc) died in 2 seconds after walking into the room and I had all sorts of protections already cast on myself before I went in. That area is ONLY for huge groups of Epic characters.

As to the limited mage gear...I have a Staff of the Archmage that is +20 attack bonus and has a list of additional magical functions that span almost 2 full screens which I found in the World of Rhun. It and the killer sword I found that can only be used by a level 40 sorceror are the two most powerful items I've ever found in Rhun (and I can't use either of them). I have also found at least 4 robes of the Arch Magi and about 16 +7 quarterstaffs (those sold for good gold btw). Granted there does seem to be more monk and fighter gear than any other character class, but heck, mages rely more on their spells not their gear. And I quit counting Helms of Intellect +7 when I got up to 25 of them that I've found in the game in just one month. Remember the magic items are determined randomly from verious "buckets" of possible items. When you find a monster group that gives out one good item, keep going back to that monster often and you will eventually find the good gear you are after.

And remember, this module is designed to be used as a 24/7 server. There were several hundred players on at one time when this module ran on the original server. With that many players grouped into huge parties, the module had to be challenging for them or they would have quit. It's only natural that a solo player is going to find the World of Rhun to be a totally different experience than a roaming party of multiple classes and levels. That's part of why I kept saying I wished you would join the rest of us on my server.

hello nova

i am disappointed by the world of rhun
after careful consideration i trash it

i do not find interesting places to visit
i do not find good gear for mages -- or the damn belts
there is no story plot and no real quests
i find people with no head
and i see that steps are openly taken to make wizard life harder

it is impressive the amount of monk gear i find
i could name every monk piece of equipment in whole game
also impressive are the caravans of melee weapons and armors dropped
but no wizard robes -- not even the most idiotic worth 1 gp with no boon what so ever

now the weapon -- what if i like the quarterstaff?
i have found maybe 70 quarterstaff in my whole time and best enchantment was +5
there are also named quarterstaff in the game
like there are named kukri or longswords or other weapons
but i have found no named quarterstaff in rhun -- this is unnatural
instead i found streaks of named kukri longswords scythe warhammer dagger etc

why no quarterstaff?
because it is typical wizard weapon -- there is a spell to enchant it and make it a great dispeller

then i find monsters with an attack modifier of at least +21 -- how do i know?
because epic warding gives protection against enchanted attacks of up to +20
if you touch me with a +20 or less weapon i see damage reduction take place
if i see no damage reduction it mean that you touch me with a +21 weapon at least

+21 is completely out of reason

some people claim that epic warding is too much a happy protection for a wizard
they forget that you must be level 32 at least if you want epic warding
and you must be quick in battle -- the ward last max 4 minutes
then you must rest if you want it again

i find owidd mountain
i am told that my life will be miserable -- because i am wizard

how miserable can it be? let us see
indeed i see -- how lame a modder can be

the duergars warriors and the sniper you encounter first -- they openly cheat
all possess an attack of +21 at least -- with that i can live
but her enchanted arrows of the sniper is too much
it explode in fireball too powerful -- break the rules
those arrows come from the enchant arrow ability of the arcane archer class
the fireball they create is the same of a wizard -- max 10d6 fire damage
you can fire max 3 arrows -- no more until you rest

now -- energy buffer is a spell to absorb max 60 elemental damage and then fade
but the sniper hit me with one enchanted arrow and i take 46 fire damage??
i had a ring of elemental resistance too -- not just my spell

let us do math -- and see if duergars play fair or no
energy buffer protect me from 60 fire
ring protect me from 15 fire
to take 46 fire damage the sniper enchanted arrow inflicted 121 fire damage
even a wizard empowered fireball stop at 10d9 fire damage on best luck
but enchant arrow create only normal fireball of 10d6 damage
did i say you get max 3 shots? the sniper killed me with a 4th arrow

and the duergar warriors?
i was told they would dispel my magics -- i was not told they have unfair advantage
no spell in game can really dispel all enchantements in 1 hit
only mordenkainens disjuction could
only if used by very high level mage
only if used on low or moderate level target
if wizard you dispel is mighty level 32 you can not dream to expose him naked
and no dispeller can target the epic spells any way

above all no dispeller works with out performing multiple dc checks -- one per spell to strip
all happened in a single console row instead
16 enchantments gone in a instant and with out a single dc check
not even a visual effect to fake a dispeller

conclusion -- that is a script job
the duergar use unbeatable anti mage weapons
i can see how mages get miserable life in owidd place

i call this cheating -- and i feel offended
i played fair
i used my brain to adapt to the challenge
i accepted the defeats and rebuilt the lost xp and gold
i trained my wizard to be better
i kept playing despite the growing feel that mages are unwelcome in rhun
ultimately i get humiliated like that

why not scribe in module description wizard go away?

my original claim hold uncracked
wizards rule -- they are most powerful class in game
if every one follow same rules and get fair treatment

ooh -- i see now the mountain orcs are special
those are the frankensteins

i thought they were strange hard to kill
what with the pit fiend and the bald mage?
and they drop no loot :-(

good note is that the gear in that camp seem better
i have found a ring of clear thought +5 -- nice :-)
i can wink too ;-)

i still lack the greater brawler and archer belts -- to hell with them
soon i will get the epic warding feat -- the ultimate damage reduction

i must rectify -- i complained too soon
i believed mountain orcs were the regular types i would find in that region
instead they are the exception

i must thank them -- they forced me to learn a new use of spells
they die easy like any other now

wizards still rule -- my logic is flaw less

hello
you will wait very long i believe :-(

module is stingy on gear i get -- junk to no end
of the things i value i have 1 only -- the greater swordsman belt

where are the powerful wizard robes?
where are the useful helmets?
where are the good rings and amulets?
where are the other belts?
where are the good cloaks and boots?

i am level 28 -- now annoyed with this module
my level begin to play against me too

monsters appear in half dozens or dozens
generally it is no problem -- wizards shine at mass destruction

but some packs are made of frankestein replicas with stats out of reason
they have insane high saving throws and hp -- they laugh at most of my spells
killing those is becoming very hard

the rewards are not getting better instead
who be the spine less moron who designed this?
may his interiors rearrange and knot tight

his idea of challenge is blind stat boost and monster multiplication
if keeps like this soon i get a fight i can not win alone

there is smarter way to give challenge
make an assorted group of monsters -- put together rangers and meleers and casters
you can never be safe from all together -- they mean threat to any class
they mean threat -- they no need cheated stats
no cheated stats -- any class have chance to win
have them drop items related to their job and you have good reward system too

see? challenging and fun and reasonable and rewarding
instead i get frankenstein on steroids multiplied to a pack

last note -- i cleared the abyss
you said it was challenging and with good gear

to me was a happy walk
monsters? slaadji mephits wrocks succubi baalors
gear? gems gold arrows bolts books potions non magic rings non magic amulets spells weapons monk boots monk gloves 1 monk robe cloaks of nimph 1 ring for clerics 1 magic tower shield

all stuff i have no use for
maybe the spells -- i know them all anyway

all baalors died without giving any thing -- no xp and not even junk
given the name of the place i expected much better

i will try the other places you mentioned

I'll be curious to see how well your mage fares against such enemies as:

1. The Drow Clan House matrons in the underdark (specifically the numbered clan houses 1 through 8)

2. Dragcous the undead dragon

3. The Dredd Lord

4. The Formican Lair out in the Taer Desert

When you run into them, let me know how well you did.

hello
you have no experience with wizards for real?
i could describe the wonders -- but would you believe me?

wizards are frail and you would think they are weak
that is the surface -- look below it

i am sure you would play wizard with 1 hp per level if knew in advance the power you get
endure the trouble of the first 5 levels and you will see

wizards gain the ultimate power -- but they remain frail all their life

the trick is never be caught by surprise
the smart wizard keep 1 or 2 concealment spells always ready
the smart wizard fear no ambush

wizards get to pick a familiar -- which is a little wonder
similar to a summon but with 6 key differences
- he has a name
- he gains levels
- you summon him without a spell
- he does not leave when you rest
- you can take full control of him
- he is special in your heart and if he dies you feel so sorry that it hurts

the best familiar for a wizard is the pixie -- no doubt

the pixie is a rogue -- not a surrogate of rogue but a true rogue
out of combat she is equivalent to a rogue character of same level
in combat she holds her own better than you think
her small size make her immune to some dangerous area effect spells
she is born immune to mind affecting spells

above all the pixie make the perfect scout
you can possess her and use stealth to travel unseen by most -- like rogues do
unlike rogues you -pixie- can use improved invisibility and be detectable by few
during possession you can change area -- did you know?
possess your familiar in town and go scout to the other side of the world
your wizard remains in town all the time

so use the pixie to scout before you enter a new area
being prepared is half the victory -- the prepared wizard has already won instead

when the familiar dies you suffer 1d6 points of magical damage -- that much you know
perhaps you do not know that 1d6 remains 1d6 at all levels
past level 1 you can die no more with your familiar

------------------------------
want to try again a wizard? i give you a good base to build upon

race is elf
subrace none -- or a rhun subrace with intelligence boost
sex is female -- obvious :-)
familiar is pixie

starting abilities
- strength 10
- dexerity 12
- constitution 12 -- makes for 5 hp per level
- intelligence 18 -- assuming elf no subrace
- wisdom 10
- charisma 10

intelligence is your precious stat -- more you have and more you want
ability points should all go in intelligence
raise intelligence through items too

skills that are critical to all wizards
- concentration
- spellcraft

other skills at your choice
plan your skills ahead -- you get a cart of skill points per level

take all these feats
- combat casting
- improved combat casting
- spell penetration
- greater spell penetration
- epic spell penetration
- empower spell
- extend spell
- maximize spell
- quicken spell
- automatic quicken spell 1
- automatic quicken spell 2
- automatic quicken spell 3
- epic spell epic mage armor
- epic spell epic warding
- epic spell hellball

listed in no particular order -- they all are feats any wizard would want
you have room for many more feats -- all at your choice

i would not expend feats to get great intelligence or other great stuff feats
when you access great stuff feats you are level 21 -- almost a god

spell school to focus on is general -- you want no school
picking a school forever forbids you to learn specific spells

what spells to learn? you can only learn arcane spells
but you can learn every arcane spell in the world -- there is no limit

rest of the build is due to personal style
you decide the stuff by your self

To be honest, I've never played a wizard in NWN. I think I just got frustrated trying because when I bumped into a tree my character dropped dead (only 4 HP at level one is pretty pathetic). And if your familiar dies, you lose enough HP to drop dead too.

Yes it's rather strange and interesting if all the spells are available in the shops in Etum. Though it would be a nice reversal from ROM2 where the fighters got the totally unfair advantage. NWN and the World of Rhun may just be the REVENGE of the mages.

I'm not sure how to fiddle with the available scrolls in each mage shop, but I'll take a look and see what I can do. To the best of my knowledge, only one person on my server has a mage character. Most people are playing either fighters or monks (and there's at least one Paladin).

Thank you for your suggestions and advice. Let me know if/when you have more.

On the jail thing, yes I got busted by the Etum guards and didn't even know what I did wrong at the time. I guess I was standing next to a guard and it became night time. I was checking all the doors in town to see what was behind them. When it got dark, the doors must have locked for the evening. I found a locked door and tried to unlock it. Suddenly, the guards all started chasing me. I would have gotten away (I was a monk and could outrun the guards easily) but my game crashed. By the time I restarted the game and logged back into my account, my character was already caught and in jail. I lost about 16 million gold and a full set of REALLY expensive gear (plus all the extra stuff I was carrying just in case I found a character that could use them). Fortunately, I was able to build up enough money in the next day or two in order to buy my own stuff back from the open market merchants where all my stuff went on sale (the street merchants in the Trades District of Etum).

If you ever do get the guards after you, there is a shady character in the Brass Dragon Inn (in the Rural District east of Etum) who will fix your troubles with the law for a price and supposedly prevent jail time. But you have to avoid capture and get to him before you get caught. I already knew about him and intended to go see him as soon as I was away from the guards and then my game crashed on me. At the time, I was VERY upset and thought I had lost about 2 weeks worth of fantastic gear. It was a race to get more money fast enough to buy it all back before someone else on the server bought my stuff. I got most of it back, but a few of the items someone else bought before I could raise enough money again. It's a lesson I won't forget. I'm VERY nice to everyone in town now. Another alternative is to put all your gold and gear on a storage character before you try any such questionable behaviour (though as I say, I didn't even know I was doing anything wrong). At least then if you get thrown in jail you don't lose much besides having to wait 20 minutes to play again.

hello
you are a little overzealous when you exagerate a little and put way too much effort in some thing
learned :-)

wait
you do exagerate a little and put way too much effort to reply me??
so rude -- i should be offended -- mphf!

(why they must put the ! so far from the ?)

------------------------------
not a bug but some thing you may wish to fix

the shop for level 3 spells does sell animate dead
animate dead is a level 5 spell -- not 3
animate dead is missing from shop for level 5 spells

instead

the shop for level 5 spells does sell elemental shield
elemental shield is a level 4 spell -- not 5
elemental shield is missing from shop for level 4 spells

other spell shops are in order

------------------------------
can i suggest a thing about spell scrolls?
i trust you know how wizards get happy life and develop kenshiro attitude
they have a right to do it -- Wizards Of The Coast sponsored game for a reason

it is too easy if you find all spells of a level ready to buy
sorcerers have no use for scrolls -- but wizards do

if you serve all spells on silver platter then wizards become gods in no time
equivalent for fighter would be to have a selection of all enchanted weapons and they have only to decide what to use for the occasion

my suggestion is to remove the most powerful spells of each level from shops
wizards gain 78 spells in 39 level ups -- no risk to not learn every thing in time

there fore i would remove these spells at least
- acid fog
- mind fog
- darkness
- improved invisibility
- greater sanctuary
- greater stoneskin
- greater spell breach
- premonition
- meteor swarm
- flame arrow
- the many spell mantle versions
- horrid wilting
- evards black tentacles
- isaacs greater missile storm
- bigbys interposing hand
- the many dispelling spells
- mordenkainens disjunction
- wail of the banshee

they are tremendous at the lowest level you can cast them
they become more terrible as you gain levels

------------------------------
i did not know about the jail -- lol
me and my pixie familiar have been caught twice while thieving

first time i got killed by guards -- respawned with out loss

second time the landlord appeared when i opened the chest -- pixie disposed of him
i quit the house and a guard stands next to me -- neutral

was i lucky? :-)

thanks for the belt info

No, I'm not angry. I simply had a few bad days in a row at work and got a little overzealous with my response (you'll have to look that word up). If I came across as angry, I apologize.

My response was partly intended for you, but also intended to explain to everyone else who reads this forum how/why I chose the module that I'm hosting. Also to encourage others to give the module a try (and hopefully join my server as well). That's a bummer that it's too expensive for you to join us online. I'm sure it would be fun.

As to your questions about the World of Rhun:

1. The XP that you lose when gaining a level are the XP that you are over the required number for that level. In other words, you are only losing the XP that takes you exactly back to gaining that level. I'm not sure if this is caused by the NWN game or by the Rhun module. The best I can tell you is, level up your character as soon as you have enough XP to do so. Otherwise, all the XP you gain until you do will only be removed once you do level up. The up side is, XP are quite easily replaced. So is gold, but it's frustrating to lose 10% of your gold each time you die. It's even more frustrating when you realize you also lose any items you were collecting in order to complete the Etum NPC quests. If you were carrying any of these items when you die, you lose them and have to get them all again. So complete the quests if you can before you risk death exploring new areas.

2. I agree, the encounter difficulty calculator in the module is all messed up. The XP you get are supposed to be in relation to the relative total Character Rating of your party (ie the combined total levels of all characters in your party) compared to the total levels of all the creatures in the "monster" group. Unfortunately, many of the encounters inside the module have forced values entered for this rating rather that being realistically calculated. The bottom line is, many of the encounters give very goofy XP rewards. Some monsters that take you forever to defeat give you 8 XP while others that you kill in 2 seconds will give you 800 or more XP. Unless you plan to go into the module and repair all these forced ratings, you'll simply have to learn to live with this flaw. I certainly don't have the time nor the motivation to fix it. Btw, you'll also notice when you hold your cursor over the monsters that often you get a totally bogus reported difficulty rating. Some monsters are rated as EFFORTLESS and are in reality damn near impossible to kill while other groups rated as IMPOSSIBLE you kill in a single blow. The XP rewards follow these bogus difficulty ratings.

3. The module is built with about 7 or 8 defined "buckets" of possible treasure rewards based upon encounter difficulty. Within each bucket, the computer generates a random item to award to you. The belt items you are after are in one of those buckets and you will simply have to get lucky enough to randomly find them. On my server, the fighter's guild store has a boat load of them because several of us keep getting these items and selling them, but that doesn't do you any good unless you are playing on my server.

I would encourage you to try completing as many of the 40+ quests for the Etum city NPCs as possible. Some of the items you get as a reward are far more powerful than the store items you will find. It's also kinda fun tracking down all those quests plus it gives you a good reason to travel all over and explore the World. And be careful of your actions if your character class requires a specific alignment. Some of your actions alter your alignment and may cause your character to lose his/her class specific abilities until you can alter your alignment back somehow. And word of caution, do NOT get in trouble with the law in any of the cities/towns. If you get caught pickpocketing or trying to break into a locked residence, you will be thrown into jail and have all your possessions confiscated and sold at public auction (plus all your gold is taken away too). It's happened to two of us already on my server and it SUCKS. Plus, your character is really in a jail cell for 20 minutes REAL TIME before you get released.

And if you think you've seen overpowerful stuff so far, just wait until you visit such places as: the village of Glacial Hills, the village of Desert Springs, or the ancient city of Taer. Or wait until you visit the Abyss or the Underworld (not to be confused with the UnderDark or even the massive Drow elf city located down in the UnderDark deep below the ground) or the lair of the Dredd Lord or the Druergar Dwarves. These places are all VERY challenging and the rewards match the challenge. The lair of the Mountain Orcs or even the city of the Illithids (called Fantasia) are also quite challenging. So much to explore in this mega module, it'll keep you playing for many weeks (perhaps months) just to visit them all. And some of the areas require you to solve puzzles or overcome challenges to even activate the gateway to them.

There are a host of magical teleportal devices you can find or earn in the game that will speed your travel times as well. For instance, there are 9 magical obelisks spread all over. At each one, you can take a piece of the obleisk which shows up in your inventory as a magical rune that allows you to instantly teleport to that obelisk from anywhere in the world (with a few magically-protected areas that are exceptions). There are a bunch of other similar devices you can find. Each Guild Master has a quest you can perform and get a unique teleportal device which brings you back to your guild hall from anywhere in the game. I STRONGLY urge you to complete this quest if you have not already done so.

Despite the various problems with the module, I think I like the World of Rhun just as much, perhaps even more than, the modules that came with the NWN game (including the expansion packs). The creativity and the skill with which the World of Rhun has been portrayed are quite stunning. And most of the problems I believe are there simply because this is the PUBLIC release of the module not the fully-supported and updated version the authors hosted on their own dedicated servers. So not all of the module problems got fixed in the public release version.

Keep exploring and tell me about any other faults you find as well as the things you like about the World of Rhun. I'm curious to know your opinions?

i am not sure if you are angry or not

maybe you disliked my post? -- i reported a module that could be fun

i did not imply stop hosting rhun and load this instead
did i give you that impression?
i believed you would appreciate to know about it

never mind -- i am having fun with rhun on my computer
i would have fun online with you people
but the line is expensive -- more i stay more i pay

so i am here to ask things about rhun
- some times i get deprived of xp points after doing the level up
not many points but still a xp loss -- does not happen until i complete the level up process

also
- when i was level 7 some very cheap orcs were worth 184 xp
- soon i turn level 8 and the same orcs in the same area are worth 250 xp
- sooner i turn 9 and they give again 250 xp
- soonest i turn 10 and the orcs now give 100 xp
- i go to next area and i find boars and zombies and trolls worth 8 and 40 and 100 xp

i do not understand this design
module is good -- but some what inconsistent

you have played and seen it more than me -- maybe you can explain the behavior?

i must make a request to pinpoint items -- notice i learned pinpoint :-)
where can i find swordsman brawler and archer belts?
my wizard could use them

i understand that shops do not sell the belts or life becomes happy
but i am seeing overpowered items none the less -like the rune of soothing-
and i believe that the belts i want do exist some where -- where?

can you tell me? thanks

I'm sure the random dungeon module is both fine and fun. If you hunt around, you will find literally hundreds upon hudreds of FREE modules for either NWN 1 or 2 which you can download and play. Unfortunately, relatively few of them are designed to take your character from level 1 all the way to level 40. Fewer still are designed to accomodate both solo play using virtually any of the available character classes and parties of multiple characters as well. Fewer still are designed to be run as a dedicated server which runs 24/7. Fewer still are designed such that they do not require the presence of a Dungeon Master to proctor the module and direct the players actions and dole out both information and quest rewards.

At the end of all this "weeding out" process, I have personally found just TWO modules which are avaiable for FREE and fit all of the above criteria: the World of Rhun and the World of Nordock. Though I must admit limited playtesting of Nordock, I deemed World of Rhun to be much more expansive and much closer to my own preferred style of play. That is why I opted to run the World of Rhun.

There are a bunch of other Persistant World modules (aka designed to be used on a dedicated 24/7 server) out there, but the authors of all of those have yet to make their creations available to the general public. Instead, these modules are hosted on existing dedicated servers. So unless we all agreed to gather at someone else's NWN server to play, those don't do me much good trying to run my OWN server. And I refuse to host any module that can't stand on it's own without the presence of an "admin" 24/7. I work far too many hours and have precious little free time (and even then it's often days between getting a few free hours).

If someone else knows of a module that is better suited for hosting on a dedicated server than World of Rhun, please tell me where I can find it. I'd like to see it.

do not be fooled by the vault name being that of nwn 2

jump the ads and read the module info

it is designed for nwn 1 -- not nwn 2

Well NWN has two versions. NWN 1 and the newer NWN 2. The later version does not let you play as a single. You have to form a group. I have been told this by several players of NWN. I am Nova are playing his NWN Server for the original game NWN 1. It is alot like Rom2 only 3D. The 3D is rather old style and kind of limited. Still NWN can be played as a single and is interesting. It has a few things I don't like, but you can make your own map. More complex than Rom2. Quests are really quests. If you interested leave a post here.

you people should like this

it has to do with the original concept of ever changing dungeons
concept which later on inspired the infinite dungeons premium module from bioware

the difference is that this module is free and not premium
the module is complete and this is apparently the latest version of it

a pity that it discourages lone foxes like me
even small but a party is recommended
